Erin Chavez

My name is Erin Chávez and I have been working in APS schools for 15 years. I was born and raised in Albuquerque and received my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and my master's degree in Educational Thought and Sociocultural Studies from The University of New Mexico.  I spent nine years teaching mostly English, ESL, and AVID at the middle school level, and for the past four years I worked as an assistant principal.

I was a teacher at Garfield Middle School for five years and I am excited to rejoin this school community as the Restorative Practices Coordinator. As the coordinator I am working to help support staff in establishing and maintaining equitable discipline practices. It is my job to introduce and support the Garfield community in the implementation of restorative practices, which are based on the principles of relationships, respect, responsibility, repair, reintegration, and radical love.

I have always been an educator committed to social justice and disrupting systems of inequalities that affect our students. When I am not working, I spend most of my time with my daughter Maya and our dog.
